These components must withstand severe abrasion and are commonly manufactured from high chrome white iron or specialised wear-resistant materials.

What is a dredge pump impeller?

A dredge pump impeller is the rotating component that transfers energy into the dredged slurry. Because it is exposed to highly abrasive materials such as sand, gravel and mineral concentrates, it is commonly manufactured from high chrome white iron or specialised composite materials.

Which type of alloys does Mitak cast?

Mitak manufactures alloys that conform to internationally recognised specifications including ASTM A532 Class I Type A, EN 12513:2011 EN-GJN-HB555 and BS 4844. In addition, Mitak has developed a range of proprietary high-performance CrMo steels, corrosion-resistant alloys and ceramic composite materials for specialised wear applications.

What is high chrome white iron (HCWI), and why is it used for wear parts?

HCWI is a cast alloy containing high levels of chromium carbides, giving it exceptional resistance to abrasive wear.  It is the standard material choice for components exposed to sliding abrasion or gouging wear — such as slurry pump casings and impellers, mill liners, crusher concaves, and dredge pump wet-end parts — because it lasts significantly longer than standard steel in these conditions.  Because of its hardness, HCWI is brittle and is therefore not always suited to high impact applications.  For such applications, Mitak has developed a specialised range of steel alloys.

Mitak IC is Mitak’s proprietary infiltrated ceramic composite material, combining the wear resistance of ultra-hard ceramic with the strength of a cast white iron matrix.  In closely monitored case studies it has delivered up to 8x improvements in wear life compared to standard high-chrome white iron, and has been used successfully in extreme wear applications for nearly 25 years.

What is the difference between high chrome white iron and manganese steel?

High chrome white iron is designed primarily for abrasive wear resistance, while manganese steel performs best in high-impact applications where the material can work-harden during service. Selecting the correct material depends on the balance between abrasion, impact and corrosion in the operating environment.
